Message Digest

A message digest is a core term in cryptography. It creates a unique digital fingerprint for any piece of data. This process secures the blockchain from any form of manipulation.

The terms “message digest” and “hashing” are often used together. They are not the same thing. Hashing is the process. It is the action of running data through a cryptographic hash function. A message digest is the output. It is the result of that process. The cryptographic hash function is the tool used for hashing.

Several algorithms power a message digest. SHA-256 is the most widely known. It is used to secure the Bitcoin network. It produces a 256-bit digest. Other algorithms, like SHA-1 and MD5, were once popular. They are now considered insecure. This is because they suffer from collision vulnerabilities. Researchers found two different inputs that produce the same digest. This vulnerability makes them unsuitable for security applications.
